The 8th Asian & Oceanian Epilepsy Congress organised jointly by the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy, will be held in the exciting city of Melbourne, from 21st to the 24th October 2010.More than 75 local, regional and international speakers will present a range of topics that are highly relevant to recent scientific, clinical and social developments in epilepsy. The Scientific Organising Committee and the Scientific Consultative Committee have been working arduously to prepare a scientific programme with international appeal. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME The main topics of the Congress will be: Epilepsy Surgery Who and When?, Outcome in Newly-diagnosed Epilepsy, Prevention of Symptomatic Epilepsy and Psychological Wellbeing in Epilepsy. In addition to the main and post main session topics are a range of parallel sessions which focus on the pertinent issues of epilepsy practice and research, the Masakazu Seino Memorial Lecture, practical video sessions, lively debates, interactive workshops, and topical satellite symposia. The Asian Epilepsy Academy (ASEPA) will once again organise a series of didactic lectures by world-renowned experts in their respective fields and precongress workshops on epilepsy surgery and basic science. EPILEPSY AND SOCIETY PROGRAMMEAn exciting programme that will be of great interest to both individuals living with epilepsy and for staff from community organisations supporting people living with epilepsy is scheduled for Thursday 21st October. This programme has been developed by local and regional committees of the International Bureau for Epilepsy.A well regarded group of presenters includes widely published sociologist Graham SCAMBLER from University of Central London, who will present on stigma and quality of life, and Olympic cyclist Marion CLIGNET, who will speak about exercise, diet and AEDs. Other keynote addresses will focus on epilepsy and depression, epilepsy and sexuality, epilepsy and employment, life after surgery new directions and advocacy and epilepsy. A series of workshops explore memory and epilepsy, epilepsy, sport and exercise, practical ways to manage depression and improving outcomes for people with epilepsy. In addition there will be a feature on epilepsy and the arts with renowned figures and the outstanding persons with epilepsy awards allowing for individuals to share their personal experiences of living with epilepsy. Delegates are invited to stay for the welcome ceremony of the congress and the reception that follows later that evening.An optional tour will be arranged for Friday 22nd October that will visit the spectacular countryside surrounding Melbourne.
